Of all the photos that I have edited today, here are a few of Adam that I thought I would share.

I love my landscape photography – but this is still my favourite little subject…

Feeding Daisy (look at the delight on his face…). Excuse the odd editing – I was bored after all the colour of the landscapes earlier!!

Sitting in the grasses in the setting sun

Little monkey – copying what Mummy does with her tripod…

Caution, Meet Wind…

7 Mar

Even though my dare/challenges only officially start tomorrow, in the spirit of “do something that scares you”, I conquered one of my fears today.

We are having a heat wave in Cape Town at the moment (it is topping 35 degrees as I write this). Today was one of those glorious days with no wind and an enveloping, baking heat. One of those days where the only sensible place to be is at the beach (or in a freezer).

We went to the beach. And the beach was p.a.c.k.e.d. Normally I would sit and envy all the people swimming in the waves. I would get my toes wet, but not much more. Not wanting to expose my white wobbly bits, I would have sat on the sidelines, wishing I was out in the water.

Today, I thought about it, and then threw caution to the wind. I stripped down to the white wobblies and waded out into the water. In front of a p.a.c.k.e.d. beach.

***There’s the wind, and there’s caution flying in it***

Those waves in the photo up there? … I swam in those waves. And it was freezing. And it made my arms and legs numb.

And it was wonderful.

I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean,
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens,
Promise me that you’ll give faith a fighting chance,
when you get the choice to sit it out or dance.

Dance….  , I hope you Dance!

Ye Olde Camera

16 Apr

Although my camera is still around, I seem have lost my photo-mojo a little bit. Not sure where it ran off to… But, I am not overly concerned, as I know it will come back when it is good and ready.

My camera bag is strategically placed on the dining room table, ready to be hauled off and out of the house at a moments notice, but it is (at least to me anyway) practically invisible.

Luckily there have been a few shots here and there. Like this one.

Erin ran over (in her pajamas) to visit Adam a few nights ago and they sat on the front step like this for ages. I don’t think they really even spoke to each other, they just sat. The sun was setting and I think they were simply enjoying the approaching evening together.

For a cynical old adult like me, it made me believe in wonder and magic and innocence, all beautifully embodied in the still companionship of two small children.

I hate having my photo taken. Hate it to the essential core of my being. Which is why I prefer to be on the other side of the camera. Last weekend I finally attempted a self-portrait for the first time. I have wanted to do one for ages, but could never pluck up the courage.

I chose my favourite photo and posted it on my photo blog. I thought it was quite nice. But my mom was non-plussed. She is nagging me to post a colour one. Not a fan of the monochrome, my mother.

So, here is the colour version, with a bit more than just one eye showing. Let me stress, I am posting under duress. I would rather hide. But I am trying to be fearless…

“To me, Fearless is not the absence of fear. It’s not being completely unafraid. To me, Fearless is having fears. Fearless is having doubts. Lots of them. To me, Fearless is living in spite of those things that scare you to death. Fearless is falling madly in love again, even though you’ve been hurt before. Fearless is getting back up and fighting for what you want over and over again…even though every time you’ve tried before, you’ve lost. It’s Fearless to have faith that someday things will change. Fearless is having courage to say goodbye to someone who only hurts you, even if you can’t breathe without them. And when someone apologizes to you enough times for things they’ll never stop doing, I think it’s Fearless to stop believing them. It’s Fearless to say “you’re NOT sorry”, and walk away. I think loving someone despite what people think is Fearless. I think allowing yourself to cry on the bathroom floor is Fearless. Letting go is Fearless. Then, moving on and being alright…That’s Fearless too. But no matter what love throws at you, you have to believe in it. You have to believe in love stories and prince charmings and happily every after. Because I think love is Fearless.”  ~ Taylor Swift

Look who I visited today. Oh, my word, I couldn’t make myself leave… Jackie practically had to kick me out of the house. Offering to lend me all sorts of things for Adam just to get me out…

And she slept like an angel the entire time I was there. I don’t know why new mothers always make such a fuss about sleep deprivation… it can’t possibly be as bad as I remember. Except of course, if you can’t close your eyes because you can’t stop gazing at this…

Amazingly I managed to get some decent photos. Considering we were in a dark room and she had her back to the light. That’s why the photo above is so grainy. She looks amazingly like Jaimie at that age. But also not like Jaimie at all.

Jaimie is on a complete BUZZZ  about being a big sister. Even Adam was suitably impressed. Of course, a lollipop is almost as exciting as a baby sister.

What is it about your friend’s babies that tugs at your heart? Especially the ones that you have known since you were (almost) babies.
