Audrey Hepburn

17 Nov

I love Audrey Hepburn.

I suspect it has something to do with this photo:

Paris + balloons = Love. You already know I love balloons. But Paris? You didn’t know I love Paris did you? … oh, yes, I still need to get to that. Like a secret love affair, I don’t want to share it…

But my love of Audrey Hepburn goes deeper than a single photo. There was, of course, My Fair Lady. But what I love most, what I identify with most, is her sense of spirit and her love of life, as well as her grounded view of beauty and the important things in life. Also, she was a self-proclaimed introvert — just like me. “I don’t want to be alone, I want to be left alone” – a subtle difference that means everything.

She had many profound things to say. But these are my two favourites insights:

I garden, therefore I am

“If you have a mind at peace, a heart that cannot harden, go find a door that opens wide upon a lovely garden.”

Who would have ever thought that I would have developed green fingers. Certainly not the people who know me best! But I think I knew all along that I would get to this point. Everyone has felt that deep knowing at some point in their lives. Somehow I have always known that I was meant to get my fingers dirty and watch things grow. I think it was something that was always written into my soul and now that I have started, I am fully absorbed.

“The garden is a mirror of the heart.”

Make no mistake, it takes both time and money (both of which I have in short supply), but it takes patience and determination too (and I have that in bucketloads!). My garden will never be perfect, and there will always be more weeds needing to be pulled up. But I love it with a passion that still surprises me. Every now and then I stop and ask myself: seriously, this??

I recently dug up all the grass in my front garden and planted flowers everywhere. Every morning and evening I inspect them and enjoy them. I know it keeps me grounded and present and grateful.

“Gardening is the purest of human pleasures.” — Francis Bacon

My greatest pleasure this month has been my veggie garden. Most of it started off as seeds planted in a tray and they have grown into a substantial veggie garden! In my little veggie patch I have:

… tomatoes, beans, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, gem squash, lettuce, chillies, green peppers, rocket, cucumbers, strawberries, spring onions, chives and herbs (rosemary, origanum, basil, mint, parsley, coriander). And there is more on my “want” list.

Last week I made a vegetarian bolognaise with fresh herbs. Today Adam and I picked lettuce, chives and herbs for a salad (and he even ate the salad!). I can’t believe that I won’t need to buy prepackaged lettuce or tomatoes this summer. I can have a fresh salad whenever I want it.

This evening, just after the sun had set, I stood and watered my garden. Peaceful, quiet and perfect.

“One who plants a garden, plants happiness.”

Funny Friday

5 Nov

So many things to smile about:

This made me laugh (so true):

And then, the ever reliable Kulula also contributing to the fun and supporting Movember.

And finally (hysterical) laugh of the week has to go to Juju and the ANCYL. Thanks ever so much for making me laugh so much. Of course, we couldn’t wait for the Nando’s comeback:

Halloween!

1 Nov

Oh, did we have fun this Halloween!!

After a few glitches (my son wanting to dress up as a fairy) … (my son’s extreme disapproval of my ghoulish makeup and black nail polish. Especially the black nail polish), we were good to go!!

Adam was a little apprehensive at the first house, but got a great reception (helps when you have lovely neighbours), then, as soon as he discovered people were GIVING him SWEETS, he was on full throttle excitement!

There were plenty of kids running around and we got the scoop from them on what houses were dishing out sweets. I enjoyed prancing around in my witch outfit, although some little brat asked me to take off my mask so he could look at it… *snotklap*.. Here is my death-knight testing out my broom!!

The Death-Knight and Daddy cruising the streets, scoping the neighbourhood for treats.

His little orange pumpkin was filled to overflowing by the time we were done!

And look at the stash!!!!!! I was totally impressed with the spirit of the people in the complex! (this is only about half of it).

The Death-Knight was particularly pleased with his bag of blood and took great delight in “painting” his mouth with “blood”. The stuff was sickly sweet and, after all the sugar, he was bouncing around on a massive sugar high. After all the excitement and sugar, needless to say, bed time was a little tricky!

Of all the photos that I have edited today, here are a few of Adam that I thought I would share.

I love my landscape photography – but this is still my favourite little subject…

Feeding Daisy (look at the delight on his face…). Excuse the odd editing – I was bored after all the colour of the landscapes earlier!!

Sitting in the grasses in the setting sun

Little monkey – copying what Mummy does with her tripod…

Mzanzi for shorrrre!!!

Can you feel it?!! For the rest of my life I will remember waking up on 11 June 2010 to the sound of vuvuzelas blaring. What an incredible way to start the day!

It is here!!! A nation united. For real. I have never felt such a fever pitch of excitement in my life. The Rugby World Cup Final is the only thing that comes close.

We blew our vuvuzela too (check out the vein popping in the neck)!

Wednesday’s Joy Bubble (#4)

2 Jun

I have been away, just got back, over 150 e-mails to read and blogs to catch up on. Also over 300 photos to go through. I think I’ll go back into hiding! But I can’t go without sharing a little joy.

(I’ll be back sometime next week with some serious photo-drunk posts). Till then, be happy my schnnookums!!
